What We Do
The powers and duties of Corporation Counsel are defined by statute and include prosecuting and defending all civil actions in which the County, or its Board of Supervisors, committees, departments, or officers are a party or have an interest; giving legal advice to the Board of Supervisors, committees, departments, agencies, and officers in all civil matters; and performing all duties in connection with civil matters relating to the County, the Board of Supervisors, agencies, or officers.
Examples of common duties of Corporation Counsel include: General Legal Services; Mental Health Committments; CHIPS, JIPS, and TPRs; Guardianship and Protective Placement proceedings; and Zoning and Health Code enforcement. In addition, in some Counties, the Corporation Counsel will also represent the State of Wisconsin in Child Support proceedings.
What We Don't Do
Corporation Counsel does not prosecute criminal cases. Corporation Counsel does not represent individuals or business corporations. Corporation Counsel does not provide legal advice to individuals.
